Scenic Painting is a new course offered at GC & SU that focuses on the basic tools and techniques of scenic painting for theatre. Students learn about brushes, paints, and surfaces as well as faux treatments, tromp l'oeil, and realistic effects such as aging and restoration. Final projects include the completion of paint sample flats that include faux wood, stone, brick, and cartooning skills.
For the midterm in this class, I chose to have the students do the prep work for a 'client' with little focus on a final product. This allowed the students to focus on the skills of process, and concentrate on the fundamental steps that are applicable in scenarios beyond 'just paint a brick wall".
